上期说到，读Gore Vidal的历史小说《Burr》时，作为读者我认为被刻画得最有趣的角色是Jefferson。

然而，我还有一个身份！我是Aaron Burr迷！若你是一个Burr迷，那么在这部小说里最爱的配角估计会是——Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson！我们的魔鬼AJ！

先介绍一下Andrew Jackson。他是美国第七任总统，AJ将美国的选举权从精英人士扩大到了全体民众（白人男性范围）。他隶属于民主共和党（Jefferson开创的Democratic-Republican），但他的支持者们开创了当代的民主党派（modern Democratic Party）。

Jackson's supporters began to form the modern Democratic Party.

让我们开启摘抄小说Burr第一视角中，Jackson将军的苏炸裂进化之旅。

The eyes were shut now; small feet on the edge of the grate. “I am old and therefore moderate. The only old man I know who loves danger and surprise is Andrew Jackson. But then I think there must be a medical explanation. Too much blood in the brain. At least I prefer the decorous way Matty Van does things. He is without ferocity, while Clay is unstable and corrupt.”

Burr表示，他所知道的唯一一个热爱危险和惊喜的老人只有Andrew Jackson。但他认为那更多是一个医学问题导致的 -- Too much blood in the brain -- 我能翻译成脑充血吗？

Burr的幽默感遍布在每个人身上。

“By the Eternal, Colonel Burr, I am your admirer for life!” Andrew Jackson was a handsome, fiery-tempered young man who tended to incoherence when passionate, which was much of the time. He used also to drool at the corners of his mouth, a disagreeable habit since overcome. Jefferson called him “the mad dog.”

 

I gave Jackson a fine dinner party but I don’t think he enjoyed the company as much as he did the wines. He disliked Congress and Congress reciprocated. Later Jackson resigned his seat, out of boredom I suspect. Although our friendship was to prove most useful to me in the election of 1800, six years later it was nearly fatal to him, poor man, when I was arrested for treason and he was named my accomplice.

Burr对AJ的形容：handsome (又是handsome XD)，脾气火爆，情绪激动的时候会语无伦次，以前总是会流口水现在好了； Jefferson对AJ的形容：疯狗。

我笑没了。（读者中）谁能不爱上这样的AJ呢？！（反正我第一个爱XD）

Burr和AJ的友谊在1800选举中对Burr非常有利，然而六年之后在叛国审判中AJ却被Burr牵连，对AJ（的政治）生涯几乎致命。我看到这里的风轻云淡时，以为AJ和Burr的友情也就非常普通的泛泛之交罢了。我错了。

他们的交情如何我也不清楚，但至少这本书里，1807审判中，Burr众叛亲离，Jefferson坚决要让他被吊死，而Burr以往的盟友中唯有Andrew Jackson苏爆炸！敬请期待。

I stayed five days at the Hermitage and Jackson did his best to make me feel at home. “Though damn it, Rachel, we can’t serve him food like this, fit for field-hands!” And he would shove an offending dish into the butler’s hand. “Colonel Burr kept the best table I ever et at in Philadelphia, and with wine , Rachel, not this sour grape-juice!”

 

“Now, General,” Rachel would murmur, soothing him the way one would a barking dog.

饭桌上，Rachel (Jackson夫人) 安抚抱怨酒太酸的Jackson，就如同一个人在安抚一只嚎叫的狗。这比喻让我直接笑裂。

我觉得在1800之前，Burr对AJ的看法大概类似于：General Jackson is a nice young man, straightforward, not very intelligent but definitely warm-hearted -- just a little bit too much for me!

Jackson shouted at me his view of the duel. “Never read such a damned lot of nonsense as the press has been writing! All that hypocritical caterwauling for that Creole bastard who fought you of his own free will, just like a gentleman which he wasn’t, if you’ll forgive me, Colonel! I know you couldn’t have met him unless you thought he was one, but he was not, Sir. He was the worst man in this union, as you, Sir, are the best. The best and that goes for that pusillanimous spotted caitiff of a president we got. I only fear—aside from the damage it’s done you, Sir, and that we’ll undo quick enough—I fear that duelling will be stamped out and where would we all be then, I ask you? Why, there’s a number of men right here in Nashville that one day I know I’ll take a gun to, even if I am a poor shot, and that’s the truth. It must be a flaw in my vision ...” This rambling speech was delivered in fits and starts as we approached through a dense pine-wood the Hermitage.

此处是Burr和Hamilton决裂预备决斗的时候，AJ对Burr说的话。他大骂Hamilton是个Creole到处嚷嚷的虚伪混蛋，说如果他是个绅士他就该主动提出找Burr决斗。又说Hamilton是国会中最差的人，而Burr是最好的。

读者可以看出AJ恭维前辈的成分，Burr肯定也能看得出。然而人们总是喜欢听到肯定和赞美，而和这本书中年轻AJ的互动一番绝对能让人感觉到如沐春风，愉悦舒畅。

之后AJ说他自己将来肯定会决斗（AJ，你说对了！），即使他枪法不好。

我惊呆了……AJ枪法不好？！那么他如同传奇般的决斗获胜一定得益于他坚定的信念……在吃了颗枪子之后依然干翻了他的敌人！不过，AJ这么说也可能是因为听者Burr自己是个神枪手XD（我永远也不会原谅LMM在音乐剧里为了Ham的glory，居然让Burr亲口说自己是个poor shot……不！Burr枪法可高超了！）

I confess that I was deeply and permanently disgusted by the extent and the variety of my countrymen’s hypocrisy. Ninety per cent of our newspapers were Republican and so had devoted the better part of two decades to the vilification of Alexander Hamilton. Therefore, it was with some wonder that I read in their pages of the saintly Hamilton’s martyrdom at my wicked hands. I confess that during those days immediately following Hamilton’s death, I ceased to want to live amongst such a people.

 

I did receive encouraging messages from a number of gentlemen who could not be regarded as friends. Among them was George Clinton who despatched a verbal message to me by way of Matt Davis. “You are perfectly innocent of any crime since the bastard Hamilton was under no obligation to meet you.”

 

This was the private view of every gentleman in the country. How could it be otherwise? From DeWitt Clinton to Andrew Jackson, from Henry Clay to John Randolph, a large number of our leaders have been involved, like it or not, in similar affairs of honour. But no gentleman came to my defence in public.

这段讲述了Burr的视角，他在和Alexander Hamilton的决斗之后，感到美国政治界的伪善，不想在新大陆待了。这是他为自己找的借口，但也是Burr的真实感受。

讽刺的是，Jefferson是那个提倡新闻自由的人，但当时民主共和党在实际操作中也不可避免利用媒体偏向他们自己。（和如今的美国/西方/全世界不论红蓝媒体都一致，哪怕我在社会问题上偏左，我也必须说媒体的洗脑术的确是致命的。无论此媒体为哪方服务。）

有一些人在私下表达了对Burr的支持，但他们无法公开发言。包括Andrew Jackson。

我特地选取此段，是因为在1804年没有站出来的Andrew Jackson在1807年的表现彻底逆转了读者印象。1807年的叛国审判上，Jackson的形象在Burr眼中简直闪闪发光——让我疯狂爱上AJ & Burr。

As we galloped toward the Hermitage, the wind combed back Jackson’s thick reddish hair like a horse’s mane (why did so many of our most famous leaders have red hair? Celtic blood? Or is there some magic in red? Need I add that our current President is over six feet tall).

这段是，Burr的决斗过后他和AJ的会面。Burr注意到风把AJ浓密的红发吹起，就如同马的鬃毛。他感叹，为什么这么多著名的领导人都有着红头发？

Burr在说Jackson，Jefferson（现任总统），以及那个死于他枪下的人。

“Well, Sir, I waited deliberately for that leper to fire first. Now mind you I am a poor shot, and he was a fine shot, curse him, and younger than I. So I just stood there, wearing this loose coat which made me look larger than I am. Well, he fired and I was hit. Luckily, it didn’t knock the wind out, as I feared it might. So I was clear-headed, and knew that I wasn’t mortally wounded, though I tell you, Colonel, even if I had been shot through the brain I would have lived long enough to do what I intended to do all along.”

 

Jackson laughed grimly, the cold pale blue eyes fixed on mine. “You should have seen his face when I did not fall. Seen his face when I slowly raised my pistol and pulled the trigger. Seen his face when the goddamned hammer struck at half-cock. So we had a pow-wow. And the seconds allowed me another try. Well, Charles Dickinson was white as a sheet, and sweating. Did Hamilton sweat, too?”

 

“No more than I.”

 

“But then you didn’t have all the time I had to enjoy yourself and watch the devil squirm. Well, then I slowly raised my pistol a second time, the blood by now is streaming down my side and making a puddle at my feet, and so knowing I’d be unconscious presently, this time I fired fast, fired straight at him, and he was dead, Sir, dead,with a screech like a pig’s on butchering day! You should have seen him fall!”

1805年AJ和Burr上校讲起他自己的决斗。（和Charles Dickinson，一个诋毁他妻子Rachel的人的决斗。）我正式敲定AJ & Burr干脆取名叫决斗组算了。

我们可以看出Burr和AJ对于决斗态度的不同。Burr决斗后痛恨美国政治的伪善，痛恨Hamilton死前的伪善，尤为痛恨Jefferson的伪善，然而，或许他自己也有一些注重名誉下的hypocrisy吧。

但“伪善”（可以细化成“虚伪的善良”）和“Andrew Jackson”这两个词绝对是宇宙中最遥远的两个点。AJ痛恨虚伪，也根本不在乎是否被看作善良。决斗后，他津津乐道讲起自己如何杀死Charles Dickinson‘那只猪’。

——我告诉你，上校，就算我脑袋被射穿了，这也足够我活到成功杀了他的时候。

——真可惜Hamilton没有像Dickinson那样流汗，不然你就能和我一样享受看着恶魔蠕动。

——我开枪，直接朝他开枪，他死了，先生，死了，就像一只被宰杀的猪！你该看看他是在怎么倒下的，你真该看看！

从以上AJ自己的回顾中，读者们会发现AJ完全乐得被看作一个冷酷的杀手，一个恶棍！他的第一视角可不像Burr的第一视角，丝毫不会避讳自己的黑暗面，他乐得谈论这些冰冷的怒火和杀人的激情——这也就是为什么喜欢Andrew Jackson的人会喜欢他。

What a family to have produced Randolph, Marshall and Jefferson! The first mad, the second eccentric, the third a passionate hypocrite. To add to the complication of shared blood and madness, the three detested one another.

插叙一段题外话，是审判期间Burr讲述Jefferson和他的两个血亲。John Randolph是个疯的，John Marshall大法官极其古怪，而Jefferson是个激情伪善者。他们三个共享了血液和疯狂，却谁也不赞同谁。

当时看这段时把我笑得……

Most reassuring of all was the presence of Andrew Jackson. He stood at the back of the room, staring balefully at anyone who testified against me.

 

A few days later Jackson was nearly mobbed when he addressed an anti-Burr crowd in front of a grocery shop on the edge of the capitol green. But he held his ground and, with many an oath, declared that I was the victim of political persecution and that anyone who believed a word James Wilkinson said was a goddamned fool for Wilkinson was a liar, a bastard from Hell, and in the pay of the Spanish government. My poor friend had a difficult time in Richmond and I fear—hard as it is to believe now—that the plebs actually laughed at their future idol Andrew Jackson. I at least blessed him for the friend he was.

我没怎么摘抄1807审判Burr的案子，一是当时看得非常紧张，二是这段比较精彩就不（过多）剧透了XD

直接摘，可能体现不出AJ的形象在这部分剧情中的伟岸……对于读者，那是Burr漫长的抓进去被放出来又抓进去……被对峙的过程。Burr眼中，Jefferson偏执得快发了疯，Madison保持沉默，Dolley（Madison的妻子，因为Burr牵线搭桥认识的hh）夹在中间左右为难……Most reassuring of all was the presence of Andrew Jackson. 在这个时候，挺身而出的AJ是“法庭上最令人安心的存在”。他站在房间后方，用死亡目光瞪着每个胆敢反对Burr的人。

即使知道Jackson将军也被牵连，他在立场上必须和Burr站在一起——但在AJ依然可以选择关起门来仅口头放话的时候，他还是直接站出来支持Burr。AJ在国会大厦边缘向反Burr的人群发表讲话时，几乎被暴民围攻，但他坚持自己的立场，发誓宣布Burr是政治迫害的受害者。——我看到这里时真的泪目了。

作为读者，我觉得在此之前，Jackson将军在Burr的眼中其实并不是很深刻或很可靠的朋友，充其量只是个友善的Ally。AJ对于Burr来说，甚至可能只是个过于冲动脾气暴躁的“愣头青”，在思想水平上Burr甚至有点看不上他（相对Jefferson和Hamilton还有Jemme Madison，或许吧）。但是在1807年，Burr眼中的AJ是伪善者和暴民攻击中唯一的锚，房间里最令人安心的存在——亲爱的读者们，请原谅我过重的AJ&Burr滤镜——他在闪闪发光！闪闪发光！！

Burr对AJ的态度因此变为My poor friend had a difficult time in Richmond，还有I at least blessed him for the friend he was. 不过对于AJ一切苦涩只是暂时，他终将会成为这些民众的明日偶像！

“Challenge him!” Andrew Jackson was now entirely my partisan, and recklessly outspoken. But then he could afford to be; his letters to Governor Claiborne and to Jefferson had so cleverly established his loyalty to the union that the prosecution had originally wanted him to testify against me but as Jackson stormed about Richmond, proclaiming my innocence, the government came to regard him as a perfect nuisance, and dangerous to their weak case.

AJ完全成了Burr的狂热支持者，直言不讳，因为他有这个能力。AJ给Jefferson和州长写的信巧妙确立了他对联邦的忠诚，以至于检方原本想让AJ去帮忙作证说Burr犯了叛国罪。但随着AJ在里士满暴跳如雷并宣称Burr是无辜的，政府放弃了。因为AJ对他们薄弱的案子来说是危险的。

“Now only Jemmy Madison and I are left. And which do you think will go first to glory? That’s a horse-race to bet on, by General Jackson!—who will probably precede the two of us, poor old man, despite,” and the Colonel held up a bottle of patent medicine labelled Matchless Sanative, “this delicious restorative. When I saw the President in New York, he told me not once but three times that he owed his health to this particular medicine. Since I have never seen a man look worse, I was not impressed. But then I thought, here is Jackson with a bullet lodged next to his heart and suffering from a dozen diseases and the fact that he is not dead may well be due to Matchless Sanative. So I take it daily, always careful to follow the instructions on the bottle. The General warned me to follow the instructions to the letter. And I will say that I find it refreshing: a combination, I should guess, of opium and apple-jack.” I record all this with a certain wonder. When two historic figures meet after thirty years their talk is of Matchless Sanative!

先说一个词，apple-jack，是一种苹果做的烈酒。我笑死了！Apple Jack，AJ，烈酒，缩写和性格一模一样。世界上果然只有两个AJ，一个是Andrew Jackson，一个是苹果杰克（马迷对暗号）

这一段中，Burr笑着告诉小记者，Jemmy Madison和自己到底谁先死是一个留给Jackson将军的赌局——虽然将军可能会先他们一步。（Burr，你小看AJ了！就算心脏边上嵌着一颗子弹，他比你们都晚死了近十年！）

AJ决斗之后身体里的子弹一直没有取出来，这颗心脏边上的子弹伴着他直到他死亡。我只能说，Andrew Jackson，你不愧是美国建国时代的最大狠人。可能这就是为什么我爱你。

有Andrew Jackson的地方真的就不会虐太多。（哪怕是他死于被报纸猎巫诽谤的妻子Rachel，AJ痛哭过后，表示会一个个复仇。）同处于决斗组，Burr面对悲剧的应对机制是辛辣自嘲和幽默讽刺……而AJ？AJ的应对机制是化身魔鬼（微笑）
